Tuesday’s Thoughts: Serena Williams Sports & Style Icon

Serena Williams for Harper's Bazaar

Serena Williams has been well-known sports figure since her teens.  In the last few years she has even caught the eye of the fashion world.  However, I have long been an admirer of Serena’s style.  I remember the Serena Williams who always rocked the braids with the beads at the bottom. I loved getting my hair braided when I was younger and I remember wanting to sport the beads like the Williams sisters.  To me, their style was fresh, original, and uniquely African-American.

Serena and Venus Williams

I believe that Serena has always been fashionable although her tennis outfits do sometimes cause a stir.  However, to me, fashion is all about pushing the limit. You have to be creative and explore different things.  Serena does just that.  She always wears unique and colorful clothing both on the court and off and you have to admire her for that.  She doesn’t have the typical woman’s body, she’s more muscular and she is very curvy.  Nonetheless, Serena still manages to exude class and always be well dressed.

Serena Williams

This is why Serena has been featured in magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue.  Not only has Serena won 27 Grand Slam titles and gold Olympic medals, she always looks fabulous! She’s an inspiration to women for her fashion sense and her athletic ability.  The fashion world loves a strong powerful woman so it’s no wonder that they would place Serena on the “fashion icon” pedestal.

Interestingly enough, although Serena has become a style icon, she still manages to maintain the interest of the sports and fitness community.  Take for instance, Serena’s recent cover of SOBeFiT magazine.  SOBeFiT magazine recently featured Serena on the cover of their September/October Sports issue.  In the issue, SOBeFit spoke with Serena about her tennis career and found out the real reason why Serena hates getting injured. In the article, Serena says, “When I get injured it’s devastating because I know I won’t be able to wear heels. I’m practically in tears,” she says in the magazine’s September issue, never mentioning the fact that she would have to miss a match or tournament. She also hates working out, saying, “I’m the complete not-normal athlete, and I often wonder how I got into sports because I hate working out. I hate running. I hate all that stuff. I love doing my nails, reading, going to the movies and wearing high heels—the higher the better actually.”

Insane, I know.  The highest paid female athlete of all time and she doesn’t even like working out, she’d rather be doing her nails and going out wearing heels.  Just goes to show you can’t judge a book by its cover.  For the full article on Serena in SOBeFiT, please buy the magazine on newsstands tomorrow (8/25)  or pre-order it here: http://www.sobefitmagazine.com/ .
