Tuesday’s Stylish Thoughts: Lupita Nyong’o

Dear Pennies & Pens,

Lately, it seems that the term “Style Icon” gets thrown around way too much. Everyone and their mom seems to be a “Style Icon.” To me a style icon is more than just the clothes you wear.

It’s about the overall presentation. And I’m not just talking about the fit, the color, or the fabric. I’m talking about the person wearing the clothes and how they make others feel. If people don’t want to dress like you or express emphatic love for the way you dress, you’re not influencing anyone. And you’re not a style icon. I can’t emphasize this enough. Again, I can’t emphasize this enough.

This brings me to the subject of today’s post…Lupita Nyong’o. If you haven’t heard of this beautiful and stylish woman, you must not be into fashion, film, and the red carpet scene (which is totally fine). Lupita is an Actress who was born in Mexico to Kenyan parents. Her name is actually Spanish as it is a tradition in her family to name children after the events of the day. Lupita grew up mostly in Kenya but also spent time in Mexico and NYC.

Lupita’s biggest claim to fame is the fact that she just won an Academy Award for her role in the film 12 Years As A Slave. Lupita is the sixth black actress to win the award, the first African actress to win the award, the first Mexican actress to win the award, and the first Kenyan to win an Oscar. She’s also the fifteenth actress to win an Oscar for their debut performance in a feature film. Not too shabby huh?

What I love about Lupita is that everyone loves her! Every time someone mentions her name, they begin gushing over her like a school girl. And as I much I hate to bring race into it, it’s amazing to see the world praising an African woman for her beauty. Lupita is one that glows from the inside and the outside. I believe that’s what makes her so gorgeous. She literally has beauty and brains.

Lupita’s Red Carpet looks have also been amazing! The Oscars dress, not to mention all the additional events that she’s attended, Lupita always looks fabulous. Lupita plays with different beauty looks that match her glistening chocolate skin tone. She’s worn all types of lipsticks and eyeshadows while always looking flawless. Another fabulous item is that Lupita sat front row at Calvin Klein next to Anna Wintour and Naomi Watts. Okay, I’m done gushing now. Follow Lupita on Instagram here: @LupitaNyongo
