Pen’s Flicks: 5 Fresh New Films

Dear Pennies & Pens,

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved movies. It’s always been a big tradition in my family to go to the movies and watch movies together as a family. I’m the type of person who can quote every line of their favorite movie. But lately, it seems like a new movie is coming out every other day so it’s hard to pick the good apples from the bad ones.

So today, I am going to talk about five fresh new films that are worth you checking out. These movies each have something unique and are enjoyable films to watch. These films are based off my personal opinion so if you don’t like them or have your own recommendations, let me know in the comment section.

Five Fresh New Films:

  • In A World – Written, directed by, and starring Lake Bell. I absolutely loved this movie! It was quirky, funny, entertaining, and thought provoking. The movie is about a female vocal coach who suddenly strikes big in the voice over industry. However, she has to compete against her father and her father’s protege. The film features some serious LOL moments and a cute awkward romance. I especially appreciated the exploration of sexism in Hollywood and the voice over industry because it made you think and laugh at the same time. I highly recommend this one. • The Way Way Back – This movie stars Liam James as Duncan, Toni Collette as Pam, Duncan’s mother.  Steve Carrell as Trent, Pam’s boyfriend. The movie takes place over the summer and is essentially a coming of age story of Duncan. While the film has some serious cliche` aspects, it’s pretty good movie. Steve Carrell is hilarious per usual but he’s a total asswhole in the movie. You most likely won’t like his character but you won’t believe the ridiculous things that come out of his mouth which is why you end up laughing. Duncan is basically a shy awkward teen but gains confidence after taking a job at the local water park. This was a cool movie and you can check it out here: foxsearchlight.com/thewaywayback

  • Austenland – This is the guilty pleasure chick flick movie. The film stars Keri Russell who is a woman obsessed with Jane Austen novels and Mr. Darcy. In the movie, Keri Russell goes to England to stay at a Jane Austen themed resort. The best part of the movie is Jennifer Coolidge. She is absolutely hysterical in this film! She tries to speak in an English accent but she mixes up all her words and you can’t help but love her because she has such a fun personality in the film. Overall, I recommend this film for a chill Saturday or Sunday. Check it out here: sonyclassics.com/austenland

  • The To Do List – Oh this movie. Oh this movie. You will laugh, and laugh, and laugh again. It is just one of the funniest, most inappropriate, awkward teen movies ever made. Please don’t watch this one with your parents or your children because it is all about sex and losing your virginity. The film stars Aubrey Plaza as Brandy Klark who writes a sex to do list for the Summer after her older sister played by Rachel Bilson tells her how important it is to be experienced in college. Brandy uses her friend Cameron as a guinea pig but her main target is Rusty Waters as he is popular and gorgeous. The film is highly enjoyable and is one you’ll want to watch more than once. • Not Another Happy Ending – I saved the best for last on this one. I absolutely adore this movie and have watched it three times since I first saw it. This is a Scottish film starring Karen Gillan as Jane Lockhart and Stanley Weber as Tom Duval. The film starts with Jane as a struggling novelist who finally gets her big break via Tom. After publishing Jane’s first successful novel, Tom finds out that Jane is experiencing writer’s block. To get Jane back writing, Tom sets out on a mission with his best friend Roddy to make Jane miserable so she can write. However, during this time, Tom realizes he loves Jane and together they awkwardly navigate the road of love. I love this movie because the writing is spot on and the clothes are amazing. Jane’s tomboy style fits mine perfectly! Be sure to check this one out here: notanotherhappyending.com
