Designer Discussion with Fashion X Dallas Featured Designer Mychael Knight

Dear Pennies & Pens,

This past weekend, I was in Dallas covering Fashion X Dallas. Fashion X Dallas took place at the Fashion Industry Gallery  Thursday, November 6 – Saturday, 8, 2014. Fashion X Dallas featured runway shows and The Gallery where guests and media could view jewelry and accessories designers’ collections.

This post features my interview with designer Mychael Knight. I have been following Mychael’s work since his Project Runway days. In essence, I’m elated to be spotlighting Mychael’s work and creative process here on de la Pen…All Pen Everything. Mychael has been designing for celebrities and creating collections for 11 years.

Mychael’s aesthetic and fashion styling have been sought after from celebrities such as Khloe Kardashian, Patti LaBelle, Tarji P. Henson, and Toni Braxton. His designs have been displayed in a variety of print publlications including Elle, Essence, Marie Claire, Ebony, Black Enterprise, and The New York Times.

The vision of his line is to create forward but wearable, sexy and sophisticated sportswear for the ‘woman who’s every woman.’ It does not exclude in size, shape, income, or lifestyle. Every piece feels special, in an accessible, approachable way.

The line celebrates a woman’s body and encourages them to celebrate it; empowering them to embrace their femininity. With no further adieu, check out Designer Discussion with Fashion X Dallas Featured Designer Mychael Knight.

1. Where are you originally from?

THE WORLD! I’ma military brat, I’ve lived all over.

2. How has your heritage influenced you as a designer?

Having a strong sense of self and understanding where I come from has translated in me being fearless in the way I design.

3. Why did you decide to start your own fashion or jewelry line?

It was an opportunity to design in a different medium and create fine jewelry within the “MK” aethestic.

4. There are so many fashion & accessories designers, what makes your line stand apart from the rest?

The sex appeal I add to American sportswear while still maintaining a touch of urban sensibility.

5. What inspires you most?

Women. Especially their complex simplicity.

6. Tell me more about the design and creation process. How does it work? Do you sketch designs or actually create a sample to be recreated?

I’m usually moved by a thought or concept, which I begin designing…in my mind…literally. From that point…sketches, samples, collection.

7. Who is your favorite designer and why?

Michael Kors, Alexander Wang, DSquared, Kris Van Asche, Tim Coppens. All because they embodied what I love; clean, sporty, urban.

8. Do you use social media? Why or why not?

I do use social media. It’s more to keep me in the minds of my fans and to give them a bit of insight on Mychael Knight, the person.

9. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

Anywhere in the southern end of Italy.

10. The most stylish woman/man ever is…?

Any and every woman who’s frolicked in a pencil skirt, nip waist, killer heels, and ears tap of Chanel No. 5.
