Press Pen: New York Fashion Week Spring 2015 Trend Report

Dear Pennies & Pens,

New York Fashion Week will always hold a special place in my heart. This year was the first year I didn’t attend any of the shows since 2010. Crazy, I know! But now that I’m in Texas, I decided not to make the trek to New York this year in favor of taking a break. I must admit the break has been nice, but, I still wanted to feature New York Fashion Week.

However, I decided to switch it up and do a trend report. Most of the major publications focus their trend reports on identifying similar details seen in various designers collections. In essence, they look at every designer collection and determine what the common details are. Once there’s a detail or style seen in 2 or more collections, it’s then identified as a trend.

From there, the trends are copied by major retailers for consumers to buy. Regardless of the trends seen on the runway, consumers will always buy what they like and what suits their budget. However, it’s important to know the runway trends so you know what people may be wearing in the near future. So let’s get to it, shall we? Below you will find New York Fashion Week Spring 2015 Trend Report.

The biggest color trend was black. Black was all over the runways this season. That may sound odd since these were the Spring/Summer collections but black is back! Designers like Zang Toi, Falguni & Shane Peacock, and Naeem Khan all had black in their collections. What was interesting was that each brand presented black in their own unique way.

Falguni & Shane Peacock used black as a base color for printed looks, while Zang Toi used black for his minimalistic, modern designs. Personally, I love black (it doesn’t crack) and it’s always chic! If you look bad in black, then I don’t understand. I just don’t. Lol #sorrynotsorry.

Bold prints were also a major trend. David Tlale, a South African designer who’s been blowing up the NY scene showed African prints with white collared shirts. Desigual also presented prints that were flamboyant and fun. Naeem Khan also did prints with florals. Florals for spring certainly isn’t groundbreaking but Naeem’s take on it was fun and pretty.

Stylish sportswear was also another trend. Iconic brands like Lacoste are known for their sportswear but we also got sportswear from J. Crew and Concept Korea. Lacoste showed a collection with black, purple, yellow, blue, and red. My favorite was a purple dress that looks like it was once a jersey that was turned into a chic dress.

J.Crew’s collection had a random color palette but my favorite was a grey sweatshirt and sweatpants; it was a menswear look but I think it could be worn by either sex. Concept Korea is a group of Korean designers who show at NYFW every season. This year, one of the designers showed a cool look that had red, white, and blue. The look was dressed up with the blue blazer making it look effortlessly stylish.

The last trend was minimalism. Minimalism is coming back in style. I love minimalism because it focuses on using solid colors and shapes that are flattering for a variety of body types. J.Crew, Zang Toi, and Calvin Klein, all  featured minimalist pieces.

Overall, this season, we are seeing a move back to simple, wearable clothes with minimalist designs; bold floral prints, stylish sportswear, and best of all…more pants! It’s great to see growth and change on each designer’s runway, so until next season, I bid you adieu, New York Fashion Week!
