Dear Pennies & Pens,
In one of my last posts of 2021, Beauty and the Pen: My Natural Hair Routine, I shared with you what I do to care for my natural hair. Now, in today’s post, I am going to share a protective braid or platt tutorial.
For those that don’t know, protective braids or platts as they are sometimes called, are a hairstyle for Black women with natural hair. Originally, these braids were called platts by Black Americans but the innanet is now calling them protective braids as part of the natural hair movement. I personally call them platts but I wanted to explain so everyone understands.

Platts or protective braids do just that, they protect the hair. It’s a way of styling your hair so that it retains moisture and grows. For some reason, natural hair grows faster when braided. Therefore, wearing protective styles is best to keep your hair moisturized. And once again, protective styles promote hair growth so it’s perfect for those looking for ways to grow their hair.
Since it’s easier to do a tutorial via video, I have prepared a video tutorial for y’all. For the first video, I show you what my hair looks like before washing it. This way, I could share how to tell when your hair needs to be washed.
In the first video, share signs that your hair needs to be washed such as color fading, oily or greasy hair and lifeless curls. I also talk about Nas’ new albums, Kpop albums I got and other random tidbits.
In the second video, I actually do a live tutorial of platts. In that video, you get to see how my hair looks right after washing it (shrinkage is real y’all! lol), how I dry my hair with a T-shirt and how I prepare my hot oil treatments and finally how I platt my hair.
I hope you enjoy both videos. If you have any questions, leave a comment below or shoot me an email LoudPen@theinkspotlp.com
And there it is. de la Pen…All Pen Everything. With us, keeping it real never goes wrong.
