Press Pen: Guli Collections Show Review

Guli Collection Spring/Summer 2011 Runway Show

Dear Pennies,

It’s Pen here to report on Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Guli by Gulnara Karimova Runway Show. First off, I was immediately drawn in by the atmosphere of the Guli show. The lighting was dimmer when entering the show but when the show began the lights were turned up revealing the bright colors featured in the collection. Also, there was a folder featuring biography of Gulnara, a description of the collection and the fabrics used, also there was a traditional Uzbek tale for each show attendee’s viewing pleasure. This was awesome because it really personalized the show. Don’t get me wrong I love social media & modern technology, but, it’s taken the personal touch out of communication. It was nice to have a real personalized reading material to take home and read. In fact, I used it to help write this post. Anyway, onto the review.

Gulnara Karimova

The Guli Collection was all about the strong ethnic woman who’s not afraid to wear traditional fabrics in a contemporary way…a.k.a. the designer herself who is from Uzbekistan. All fabrics used were traditional Uzbek fabrics: Adras, Beqasam, Atlas, Han-Atlas, Excelsior silk, and Shoyi. There was a wide range of colors, everything from blue, red, purple, and green. My favorites were the harem pants, a sheer orange dress with a red color to emphasize the strong shoulder.

There was also an interesting outfit that featured a cream-colored bra top, sheer creme harem pants, and a mini shirt over the pants. I loved the look, in fact, I would definitely rock it. I also found myself admiring a multi-colored dress that included green, gold, and red. The dress hit just below the knee in the front and was longer in the back. It also had embroidery on the bottom. The way that dress flowed when the model walked down the runway was exquisite. It was like the perfect silhouette.

A white bridal gown was also featured but it was cut very low in the back. It exposed the model’s entire back making the dress more sexy although I would still consider it evening wear and I referred to it as a bridal gown because it was white. The collection ended with bodysuits that had zippers in the front with ethnic print jackets. Each model also wore a small square shaped hat with a small veil that covered the eyes only. The collection was a beautiful mixture and I would highly recommend it.

And there it is. Press Pen reporting live from de la Pen…the Fashion and Style of the Pen.
