My September 11th started with reading tweets of folks’ 9/11 memories and attending the Lela Rose Spring/Summer 2012 show. In fact, Lela began the show with a moment of silence to give bloggers, editors, and show attendees a moment to think about those lost in the tragedy.
The collection was completely contrary to how the day began, however. The colors were neon, tangerine, orange, and ivory. There was lots of silk, cotton, and sheer fabric used. Most of the pieces featured either color blocking or prints.
My favorite pieces were the printed dresses. Although for the most part, I didn’t “get” this collection. In the press kit, it states that the “collection centers around a neon graveyard…the unrestored and broken signs that dot the landscape of Las Vegas and Coney Island”. Ummm…okay. I like the use of color but the actual application is not my favorite. Why? Because the clothes aren’t artistic enough to be considered high fashion nor or are they wearable enough to make someone look & feel stylish. Also, the collection doesn’t flow. It just jumps from one piece to the other, there’s no continuity.
Overall, as Lela is definitely an established independent designer, I believe that she will continue to grow & expand her brand. Quiet as it’s kept, not every designer shows a breathtaking collection every season. There are missteps from time to time. I believe that this is simply a good idea that didn’t get executed as well as it should have.
