Press Pen: 31 Bits uses Fashion and Design to Empower People To Rise Above Poverty

Dear Pennies & Pens,

With so many fashion and accessory brands in the world, it seems that the fashion world is more driven by the almighty dollar. Like any other business, fashion brands need to make money. But at whose expense? The consumer, the designer, or the product? It seems the more a brand is driven by money the less authentic it is.

And this leads us to the innovative fashion brand, 31 Bits. 31 Bits isn’t innovative because of its designs, website, or social media presence (which FYI are all fab), it’s innovative because of why the brand was created and how their jewelry is designed. As it states in the headline, 31 Bits’ mission is to use fashion and design to empower people to rise above poverty. Pretty cool, huh? Yes, I thought so too hence this post.

As posted on the website, “the “31” comes from Proverbs 31, where it describes a diligent woman providing and caring for her family.  The “bits” comes from what the beads are made out of…”bits of paper” which gives us 31 Bits. The company empowers people through fashion by working with beneficiaries in Uganda to create fashionable, quality products. The beneficiaries earn an income enabling them to provide for their families. 31 Bits cares for them holistically through counseling, health education, finance training, and business mentorships. After five years in the program, 31 Bits beneficiaries are ready to graduate.

All of the 31 Bits products are carefully crafted by hand. From the first cut of paper to stringing on the final bead, every detail was thought through. You might find tiny differences from bead to bead, but we call those the “perfect imperfections” of having a handmade product. Each piece is unique and tells a story because it was made by a real person.”

As stated in the press release, “Inspired by the company’s deep-rooted mission to overcome poverty, the 2014 spring collection is represented by a colorful composure and sophisticated design. The line uses a pretty palette of candied pink and soft coral, with combinations of cornflower blue, cool grey, sea foam green and fierce teal.”
