LoudRead: #GirlBoss

Dear Pennies & Pens,

So while extremely hungover on New Year’s Day, I read #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso. For those that don’t know, Sophia is the Founder of Nasty Gal which is an online fashion retailer. Sophia has blown up over the past few years due to the success of Nasty Gal so I was excited to read the book.

However, I was extremely disappointed in the book. It was probably one of the more lackluster things, I’ve ever read. I mean it was certainly interesting as Sophia has a unique story. But the book wasn’t a memoir so she didn’t really delve that deep into her background.

Girlboss

What she did do was skip around to random points that touched on her life and the business. It was probably one of the most random books, I’ve ever read. I’m just confused as to what value the book actually offered and what reading it is supposed to do for you. She goes on and on about various different things but the dots never really connect and it’s unclear what her point is.

Also for a book that’s supposed to be about a “GirlBoss”, she sure doesn’t seem to encourage anyone to be one. LOL! I mean the only advice she offers is how to do a resume and it’s shitty. While entrepreneurs do have resumes, it’s not necessary. You only need a resume when looking for a job, point blank period. I have never had a prospective client or sponsor ask me or my business partner for a resume. Work samples, yes, resumes, no.

Although, I didn’t learn much from reading this book, it did motivate me to push harder with my own book #MakeUrPenLOUD: How To Be A Lifestyle Blogger. Since I’m an up & coming Lifestyle Blogger, Editor,  Stylist, and Publicist, I had to write, edit, publish, and promote my book myself. So when I see entrepreneurs like Sophia making crazy amounts of cash off of what I think is just an okay book, then there’s gotta be room for #MakeUrPenLOUD: How To Be A Lifestyle Blogger.

I mean no shade, but my book is actually good! Since publishing it last year, I have received not one complaint. One of my Instagram followers even said that buying my book was the best $10 she’s spent in awhile. To be even more honest with you, it frustrates me that her book has even become a bestseller. It’s not worth the price of admission, if you ask me. And full disclosure: I got this book from the library so if you do read it, that’s all I recommend you do. Please DO NOT buy it. Save your cash for something worthwhile!

So yea not gonna lie to ya, Pennies & Pens, as a self-published author you have to understand that while I know my book is not perfect, I was genuinely trying to help people. To me, that’s all that matters. It seems like #GirlBoss was written more so to make money than to help anybody. I’m tired of writing now so if you feel so inclined, feel free to comment below and tell me if you’ve read #GirlBoss.
