Press Pen: Erin Barr Fall/Winter 2013 Show Review

Dear Pennies & Pens,

So once again, for Fall/Winter 2013, I had the chance to attend Erin Barr’s New York Fashion Week show. This season, Erin hosted her first runway show to showcase the collection. Inspired by her time spent at her family’s cabin in Northern Wisconsin, Erin utilized the landscapes and natural energy of the “Northwoods” to help create her Fall/Winter 2013 collection.

Exploring her surroundings in terms of texture and color (think tonal values of green like forest, sage, verdigris and pine up against ice and twilight blue) led to Erin delving deeper into the idea of the sensuality of nature, especially in contrast to the sensuality of the female form. I can definitely see the evidence of the collection’s inspiration within the colors used. The color palette is simple, classic, and yet it has a certain edge.

In fact most of the collection seemed to be going for that “edgy look”. However, the collection was a little too “hit” and “miss”. I either loved it or I didn’t care for it at all. Since I’m all about focusing on the positive, let’s do that. The black and beige pieces were phenomenal. These pieces were chic, trendy, and cool. The details were simple but they added real (wait for it) pizzazz as Kay Thompson said in Funny Face.

Overall, the collection was enjoyable. I just think removing a few pieces (the sage ones) would’ve taken it from enjoyable to amazing. Since Erin is such a creative designer, I know next season holds great potential. If anything, this season Erin showed us that she knows how to switch it up every season, and that’s always a good thing. Creativity is essential to being a lasting force in fashion and Erin’s got plenty of creativity.

And there it is. de la Pen…All Pen Everything.
