Pen’s Rhythm Nation: LM5 by Little Mix

Dear Pennies & Pens,

So you may not know this but I am the biggest fan of Little Mix – a girl group from the UK. I wrote about Little Mix forever ago here. Little Mix consists of Leigh Ann, Jade, Perrie, and Jesy. Each of these chicks is bad AF. I have no favorites.

Little Mix was formed 7 years ago on the X Factor UK. Since then, the girls have been blowing up the charts dropping hit after hit. Now with the release of their fifth studio album, Little Mix is showing the world that they’ve grown up. LM5 was released on November 11, 2018. I remember it like was yesterday because it was the week before Pensgiving. I played this album nonstop while getting ready for Pensgiving.

LM5 starts off with National Manthem – an acapella intro track. This song is absolute perfection and the best way to start the album. Although it’s brief, it’s very impactful. I definitely want to ink the page and give this track hella props.

Next up is Woman Like Me which was the first single from the album. This song features Nicki Minaj. I’m no Nicki fan but this track is my shit. The beat is dope plus the lyrics are honest and real. I love that Little Mix always creates empowering music that uplifts women. Their music makes me feel strong and powerful.

Think About Us – is the next song on the album and it’s interesting. I have no idea whether or not I like it. Sometimes I hear it and I love it, other times I just want it to go away. It’s so hit or miss to me. Little Mix released a video for this one and I’m kinda mad because I wanted a Joan of Arc video.

Strip – the next song features Sharaya J, a UK based lyricist. I had never heard of Sharaya J but I bang with her hard after this track. Her verse is lit and with a bald head, she’s sporting a truly bold look. And how could you not respect that?! I love this song because it encourages women to see and love their natural beauty. “Take off all my makeup cause I love what’s under it, Wrap up all your words, I don’t give a fuck, I’m over it” (look this lyric up) The video is cute too as it features Little Mix’s Moms and sisters as well as other strong and influential women.

Monster in Me – is cool song but I have to be in the right mood to appreciate it. I really do like this song but again, I have to be in a certain mood to vibe out to it. I feel like it’s one of those deeper songs that sounds better at night. Sometimes it’s just too much during the day.

Joan of Arc – comes next and this song is every fuckin thing. Damn Little Mix came through and snatched everyone’s wig with this one. This song was made for ass shaking and two stepping. The best part? It also makes you feel like you can conquer the world. “Man, I feel like Cleopatra. Joan of Arc. Queen of Hearts. Tonight it’s only me that matters. I don’t need a man. If I’m loving you it’s cause I can. Fan of myself, stan of myself, I love me so much I put my hands on myself.” – When you listen to this song, make sure you “drop it so low that your thighs get sore”. Little Mix is officially swagged the fuck out with this one.

Love a Girl Right – in some serious genius boss moves, Little Mix figured out a way to remake Sisqo’s Thong Song. But somehow, they made the track about treating their homegirl right. The song literally threatens the boyfriend of their homegirl to treat her right or he’ll lose the girl’s love. It’s definitely a solid track.

American Boy – As an American girl, I can’t help but love this song. It’s got a sick beat, catchy lyrics, and a cool vibe. This song is definitely my new ish. Like I am so here for it.

Told You So – proves that the ladies of Little Mix have a true friendship and sisterly bond. On this track, the girls sing about comforting their homegirl after she goes through a breakup. As they sing on the track, “Girl just come by mine tonight, I’ve got wine and makeup wipes.” To my Pennies let me ask you this – there’s nothing like being able to spill the tea to your BFF, am I right?! Tea Tuesdays is sometimes better than therapy.

Wasabi – is EPIC. This song is so swagalicious!!! From the beat to the lyrics, this song is everything. They took sugar and spice to make something nice. Little Mix came through and shitted on their haters while also making a song you can shake your ass to. “Mix me up, I’m sweet and salty like hot Wasabi.”

More Than Words – features Kamille, a singer and songwriter who has collaborated with Little Mix many times in the past. This time, Kamille gets a feature on the song and also appears in the music video. This song is definitely dope. I love the vocals and Little Mix and Kamille blend so well together. Kamille is definitely the unofficial fifth member. I like the simplicity of beat but the complexity of the lyrics. It’s an even balance that makes the song flow perfectly.

Motivate – this song is about more than being Boo’d up. It’s about being with a man who motivates you to do better and be the best you can be. This is important because it encourages women to be with men who love our strength, power, and ambition. As the women’s movement continues to grow, we need to understand that men are still a very real part of our lives – they’re our spouses, mates, friends, and family members. In the case of a significant other, you want a man who loves you for who you are but also wants you to be the best version of yourself. He should motivate you not tear you down. So anywho, Little Mix really delivers on this track. The lyrics stand out the most but of course the beat deserves honorable mention for what’s a pop track without a good beat?!

Notice – uh oh. Right after Motivate, Little Mix lets ol boy have it in Notice. Many of my Pennies have been there. The day when Pen stops noticing. You could be fresh out of the shower with nothing on and he doesn’t even look up from his phone. Ouch. This song is all about how you felt in that moment. So if you’ve been there or are there now, let this song comfort and console you.
