Pen’s Rhythm Nation: Singular Act I by Sabrina Carpenter

Dear Pennies & Pens,

So when we weren’t looking, Disney created another soon to be pop icon aka Sabrina Carpenter. I first learned of Sabrina from Girl Meets World, the modern reboot of Boy Meets World. Sabrina plays the main character’s BFF. She’s a great actress and she’s sang on the show but I never thought I would like her music as much as I do.

One day a few months ago, I was just watching random videos on YouTube and I came across Sabrina’s song, Sue Me. I instantly fell in love with the song and video so of course I was curious to hear more of her music. And so, the next thing I know, I’m adding her album, Singular Act I to my Apple Music library.

And guess what?! That joint has been in rotation ever since. I literally play this album all the time. It is so dope! I absolutely adore it. The album is pretty much the definition of pop with its uptempo beats, memorable lyrics, and fresh vocals.

The first track, Almost Love has the sickest beat. It’s a song you’re supposed to bop your head to or shake your ass to. Whichever you prefer. The next song, Paris is sick too. The best part about this song is the lyrics. It really makes you think. Sometimes in relationships, we’re quick to move on (especially in the swipe left day and age that we live in) but in reality, we already have the love that we need/want. So it’s like you have to be careful chasing fantasies in love and instead be happy with who you’re already with because that’s most likely your true love.

After those two songs, Sabrina takes us to Hold Tight. This song is sexy and fun. Again, it’s Sabrina’s raspy vocals that keep this song on repeat in my playlist. I also like that beat and the way the song is blended, Sabrina really nails this track.

Sue Me is track number four and since it’s the song that introduced me to Sabrina’s music, I am inherently loyal to it. This song is fuckin litty! Sabrina basically shits on her ex and lets him know that she’s moving the fuck on and if he wants to be mad…he can “sue”. It’s fuckin genius dude! The video is also everything because it includes Sabrina’s BFF Joey (the actress from The Kissing Booth). She basically acts out the lyrics of the song and it’s fire! I love when videos are literal.

Prfct is track number five. This song is pretty dope. I like it although I wouldn’t classify it as one of my favorites. It fits really well on the album as a whole but it’s not the song that you skip other tracks to get to…if that makes sense?!

Bad Time is track number six and it’s another song about an ex. In this one, Sabrina talks about how the ex wants to come back but she’s going to tell him “It’s a bad time for a good time. This is not like the last time when you were calling me hoping for a good time.” Basically, Sabrina is letting ol boy know that she is done with his ass! I am so here for this. Good riddance to bad rubbish!!!

Mona Lisa is track number 7 and it’s definitely dope. I really dug this one. Sabrina has some real swag and it shows on this song. Like she says, “Don’t leave me hanging like the Mona Lisa”. It’s litty!!!

Diamonds are forever is the last and final track and wow what a way to end it. This song borrows from one of the best blondes to ever do it, Miss Marilyn Monroe. In her film, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Marilyn performs Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend…you honestly have to see the movie from beginning to end to understand why this scene and song are so dope. But anywho, Sabrina SLAYS the fuckin vocals on this track. Who knew a white girl could sing like that?! I guess she got some of that blue-eyed soul from Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, and Justin Timberlake. Cause damn b, damn. Sabrina came through like she was Whitney or Mariah.
