Pen’s Rhythm Nation: Why Do Fools Fall in Love by Diana Ross

Dear Pennies & Pens,

It’s ya girl LoudPen, back with another gem in my vinyl collection. Today, I’ll be talking about Why Do Fools Fall in Love by Diana Ross. Released in 1981, Why Do Fools Fall in Love was produced by Diana Ross.

As I mentioned, it’s beyond innovative that like her contemporary, Donna Summer, Diana Ross was producing her own music. Again, in the 80s, Black women didn’t usually have creative control over their work. So for Diana to take control of her music by producing it herself is super cool.

The album starts with the title track, “Why Do Fools Fall in Love”. This song was originally written by Frankie Lymon, Herman Santiago and Jimmy Merchant. Although, the official song credits only list Frankie Lymon and Morris Levy. Frankie Lymon was a singer who gained fame in the 1950s as a member of the group, The Teenagers.

“Why Do Fools Fall in Love” is definitely an iconic song and a true classic. It still bops after all these years. The next few songs, “Sweet Surrender”, “Mirror, Mirror” and the absolute gem, “Endless Love” all speak for themselves. These songs are truly another level. They just don’t make music like this anymore.

But knowing that Lionel Richie wrote “Endless Love” – there’s really no way to compete. Lionel is another level when it comes to songwriting. The level of talent just doesn’t exist the way it used to. There’s too many smartphones and wifi, people can’t focus long enough to write a good song.

Side B also has some bangers. My favorites are “Think I’m in Love” “Two Can Make It” and “Work That Body”. Work That Body is a literal VIBE all on its own. You just can’t compete with a song that dope. It’s literally everything.

Overall, this album is a must have. It’s a forgotten classic that must be revived asap.

And there it is. de la Pen…All Pen Everything. With us, keeping it real never goes wrong.
