Pen’s Eye: Espresso Nutcracker Review

Dear Pennies & Pens,

In this post, Pen’s Eye: Espresso Nutcracker, I will review Dallas Black Dance Academy’s annual Christmas ballet, Espresso Nutcracker. I went to see the ballet for the first time on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas.

It was such a lovely performance, Pennies & Pens! I truly enjoyed it. Honestly, it’s been years since I have seen the Nutcracker Ballet. Therefore, prior to attending the Espresso Nutcracker, I was not sure what to expect. I was excited to experience a new twist on a classic ballet. For more details on Espresso Nutcracker, check out the first post, Pen’s Eye: Dallas Black Dance Academy Presents Espresso Nutcracker.

Dallas Black Dance Academy Presents Espresso Nutcracker

Espresso Nutcracker featured an all Black cast composed of students from Dallas Black Dance Academy dancing all the key roles such as the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Snow Queen. A few of the adult roles such as Mother, Father, and Drosselmeyer were danced by professionals from Dallas Black Dance Theatre.

It was so refreshing to see diversity represented in this classic ballet. Words cannot describe how I felt to finally see a Black Sugar Plum Fairy and Snow Queen. Musically and creatively, it is a beautiful ballet so it’s was lovely to see it performed by people of color.

Espresso Nutcracker and Why Representation Matters

In essence, seeing Espresso Nutcracker reignited my interest because I felt seen and heard. This is why representation matters – it helps people relate to the performance when they see performers who look like them.

The Espresso Nutcracker was absolutely stunning. It was the perfect way to kickstart the holiday season. Thank you to the Dallas Black Dance Academy for this wonderful performance.
