Coolin in Copenhagen at The Danish Design Museum

Dear Pennies & Pens,

While in Copenhagen, I visited The Designmuseum Danmark aka The Danish Design Museum. This museum was so original and unique. I adored the exhibitions and how everything was put together. It was truly an unforgettable experience!

As stated in the press release: “The Designmuseum Danmark is housed in one of Copenhagen’s finest rococo buildings, the former Royal Frederik’s Hospital. Today, it is a modern and active place and in 2020 it will celebrate its 130th anniversary. In the middle of the museum lies the open museum garden, a bit of breathing space in the heart of the city.

The garden is used as an exhibition space and in the warmer months the museum café extends outside. Klint Café is where good design meets tasty Danish food! Danish open-face sandwiches, hot meals, freshly roasted coffee, organic soda and wine are all available.

Current exhibitions include the permanent exhibitions:

  • The 20th Century; from the avant-garde to functionalism to environmentalism and recycling.
  • Danish Design Now; contemporary Danish design, including furniture, product design, graphic design, fashion and design for public spaces.
  • The Danish Chair, An International Affair; the wonderful and diverse world of chairs and how Danish design became an international brand.
  • Temporary exhibitions include: Bauhaus; a celebration of 100 years of Bauhaus and Crème de la Crème; an opportunity to dive into a selection of top pieces from the museum’s older collections.

So let’s talk about my experience at the museum. First off, there is so much to see! I walked the entire museum because I wanted to get the full experience. It was actually tiring because each exhibit had its own style and vibe. My favorite exhibits were Danish Design Now and The Danish Chair.

As mentioned above, Danish Design Now features furniture, product design, and fashion design. For those that don’t know, the Danes are really into design and art in general. So a lot of the world’s most creative designs are products of the Danes work. It’s pretty cool!
